Local processing and offline access differ
A tool can process a photograph locally while still needing a network connection to load its interface or download a model. An installed offline editor has a different availability promise. Decide whether your requirement concerns image transfer, network availability or both.
Read the actual claim
Microsoft explicitly states that its background separation runs on the device. PhotoScissors describes a separate offline desktop product. Apple documents subject extraction in native apps, but its support pages do not establish every network behavior of a synced photo library. Those are different evidence levels, and this guide preserves them.
How the browser option behaves
Backdropless opens the selected file on the device, downloads model weights separately and computes the mask locally. The model can be cached by the browser, but storage may be cleared or unavailable. The site does not install a complete offline application or promise that a fresh browser session will work without a connection.
Worked privacy check
Use an ordinary licensed test image and inspect network requests during loading, removal and download. Distinguish a model file request from a request containing image contents. Then review any library synchronization setting outside the editor. A test of one feature is useful evidence for that feature, but it does not prove the behavior of unrelated account storage or sharing tools.
| Tool | Reason to consider it | Processing evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Photos | Built-in local background editing in Windows. | Microsoft explicitly states that background separation runs locally and the image data does not leave the device for this feature. |
| PhotoScissors | Web credit packs and a separately sold offline desktop editor. | The vendor explicitly describes its desktop version as offline. Web credit processing is a separate service. |
| Apple Photos and Preview | Built-in subject extraction on compatible Apple devices. | Native application workflow. Photo-library syncing is a separate setting; these guides do not establish every network behavior. |
| Backdropless | A local file-to-file browser workspace | Local canvas and model inference; model download is separate |
