Choose the right output

PNG keeps the decoded pixels without lossy compression and can preserve an alpha channel. It can be much larger than a photo-oriented format.

A conversion cannot recover detail already lost in the source. Start from the best original you have and avoid repeatedly saving through lossy formats.

Questions that come up

Does this change more than the extension?

Yes. The browser decodes the source, draws its pixels to a canvas and encodes a new file. The export checks its actual MIME type before saving.

Will the output be smaller?

Not always. Dimensions, image content and encoder settings affect the result. Compare the downloaded byte count and keep the original.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP can store transparency. Converting an opaque source does not create a transparent background.
