Choose the right output

JPG is useful for opaque photographs and widely accepted uploads. It uses lossy compression, so inspect small text and fine texture after export.

BMP files can contain large uncompressed pixel arrays. Exporting to a compressed format can reduce storage, but the actual result depends on the source.

Questions that come up

Does this change more than the extension?

Yes. The browser decodes the source, draws its pixels to a canvas and encodes a new file. The export checks its actual MIME type before saving.

Will the output be smaller?

Not always. Dimensions, image content and encoder settings affect the result. Compare the downloaded byte count and keep the original.

What happens to transparency?

JPG cannot store transparency. The export places transparent areas on white.
